Thousands protest against LTTE, demand release of civilians

The Sri Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (Sri-TELO), a breakaway group of the TELO, yesterday held a huge protest campaign against the Tigers in Vavuniya.

Thousands of civilians participated in the protest demanding that the LTTE immediately release all civilians held by them as a human shield and allow them free access to government controlled areas.

At first, a protest rally was held near the Children’s Park at Vairavapuliyankulam followed by a demonstration with thousands parading the streets of Vavuniya.

The protestors shouted slogans against the atrocities of the LTTE and carried placards denouncing the organization. When the procession reached Vavuniya town, all shops were closed as a mark of solidarity with the protestors.

Hundreds of three wheelers, motorcycles and other vehicles also took part in the procession.

After going through the streets of Vavuniya the protestors reached the Vavuniya District Secretariat where a delegation of the Sri-TELO met the Acting District Secretary Thirugnanasampanthar and handed over a petition to him.

This was the first time after nearly two decades an anti-LTTE protest was held successfully and the entire population of Vavuniya and its suburbs extended their fullest cooperation to an organization that was opposed to the LTTE.
