Mannar People Take to Streets Burning Prabhakaran’s Effigy
MANNAR: AN estimated crowd of about 2000-2500 peace loving people in MANNAR took to the streets during Tuesday (3) mid-noon and protested against LTTE’s continuing harassment against their kith and kin trapped in the WANNI.
The massive protest parade, organized by all anti LTTE political parties and factions started off at about 11.00 a.m. from the MANNAR stadium and wended its way through MANNAR Hospital road, THALVULPADU Road and the main roundabout in the town before the protestors assembled at MANNAR District Secretariat premises where a memorandum, calling upon the LTTE to release all civilians, held captive was delivered to the Assistant District Secretary for MANNAR Ms. S. MOHANDASS.
All segments of people on three-wheelers, motorbikes, push bicycles and buses arrived at the scene beginning at about 10.00 a.m. for the protest march.Sri Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (SRI-TELO) also took a lead in the campaign.
Protestors after the memorandum was delivered set fire to an effigy of the LTTE leader, PRABHAKARAN and shouted slogans against the brutality of the organization. The protest ended peacefully by about 1.30 p.m. with no untoward incident reported, the Police said. Security in the area remained tight as the Police were backed by Army troops serving the gulf of MANNAR.
